CHAI LOCHER

Chai LocherDocumentary filmmaker and all round media director Chai Locher (Amsterdam, 1973) founded his own production company (Visionat Media, for corporate media and documentary films) to give him the ability to create more films. He directed short fiction films and commercials and worked on several documentaries, as director as well as producer. He traveled the world both as researcher and assistent director, for documentaries in amongst others the Middle East, Kenia and Ethiopia.

With a background in Physics and Russian Language Chai Locher studied Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam and Directing Documentaries at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy.

He graduated film school with a short documentary essay about people who are looking for fossilized shark’s teeth (Searching). The film was received well both inside and outside the film academy. It had its world premiere in the First Appearance Competition of the renowned International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and was screened on national television, had a theatrical release in Holland and was screened on festivals around the world.

In 2007 and 2008 he worked on research, production and directing of A Way Out of the War on Terror, for the current affairs slot Backlight of Dutch public broadcaster VPRO. The film, about a former MI6 agent who works on dialogue as radical strategy to end the stalemate of the War on Terror, was broadcasted succesfully May 2008 in Holland, and is sold among others to Japan (NHK BS1), Sweden (Viasat Broadcasting, TV8) and Estonia (Estonian TV).

Besides this he teached Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, and together with Canadian filmmaker Peter Wintonick he organised masterclasses, debates and talkshows at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). He was chairman of the board of the Dutch organization of New Film and Television Makers (NFTVM) and has recently started as board member of the Dutch Directors Guild.

Chai Locher is now working on a feature length documentary on conflict psychology and a feature length documentary on the dying of the old Dutch elites.
